DoubleClick is a subsidiary of Google that develops and provides Internet ad serving services. Its clients include agencies, marketers (Universal McCann Interactive, AKQA etc.) and publishers who serve customers like Microsoft, General Motors, Coca-Cola, Motorola, L'Oréal, Palm, Inc., Visa USA, Nike, Carlsberg among others. DoubleClick's headquarters are in New York City, United States.
Criticism
DoubleClick is often linked with the controversy over spyware because browser HTTP cookies are set to track users as they travel from website to website and record what commercial advertisements they view and select while browsing.[6] DoubleClick is considered to be malware by several commercial organizations (Adaware, Symantec, Spybot) which detect it and provide the tools to block/remove it.
DoubleClick has also been criticized for misleading users by offering an opt-out option that is insufficiently effective. According to a San Francisco IT consulting group, although the opt-out option affects cookies, DoubleClick does not allow users to opt out of IP address-based tracking.

Click Tags Usability
A click tag is a parameter used in Flash banner ads. The parameter is a variable that defines the destination URL from the markup code. By using a click tag, the advertiser can easily see and modify the URL without a Flash developer.
The click tag enables the ad serving network to gain metrics such as the amount of clicks and views or which sites these clicks and views have been made. By reading the data gained by the click tag parameter, an advertiser can evaluate how effective the ad campaign has been.

More control over page snippets:
The way we generate the descriptions (snippets) that appear under a page in the search results is completely automated. The process uses both the content on a page as well as references to it that appear on other sites.
One source we use to generate snippets is the Open Directory Project, or ODP. Some site owners want to be to able to request not using the ODP for generating snippets, and we're happy to let you all know we've added support for this. All you have to do is add a meta tag to your pages.
To direct all search engines that support the meta tag not to use ODP information for the page's description, use the following:
Note that not all search engines may support this meta tag, so check with each for more information.
To direct Google specifically from using this information to describe a page, use the following:

In Google Lore - what are Hilltop, Florida, and Big Daddy?
Hilltop: An old and often contested algorithm that calculates PageRank based on expert documents and topical relevancy. The theory behind it was to decrease the possibility of manipulation from buying high PR links from off topic pages. This was implemented during the Florida update, which is our next topic.
Florida: The highly controversial update implemented by Google in November of 2003, much to the chagrin of many seasonal retail properties. There were several theories as to what was included in this update; Over optimization filter, competitive term filter, and the Hilltop algorithm. This update had catastrophic results on many web merchants.
Big Daddy: A test data center used by Google to preview algorithm changes. This information was made public around November of 2005 by Matt Cutts and allowed marketers to preview upcoming SERP’s.

Clicks in Google AdWords are lower than visits in Google Analytics
A campaign tracking cookie will remain for six months after a visitor clicks on your AdWords ad. If the visitor returns to your website within those six months, Google Analytics will still be able to credit the visit to the original campaign. In such cases, you can expect to see more visits than clicks.

Some Special Search Engines and Searching Symbols
Special Search Engines:
When you need an answer to a specific problem the general search engines are not so good - usually. Below are listed three new search engines, these are "answer search engines". You enter your question instead of two or three search words and in most situations you will get some kind of an answer. Sometimes almost right, but surprisingly often just the answer you are looking for.
Omgili, indexes web-based discussion forums. You can specify and look for your query if it appears in the title, in the topic or in the reply anywhere on a discussion page.
SnappyFingers, indexes millions of Frequently Asked Question pages (FAQs). The search results are presented as a list of answers and below each answer is a link to the source.
QueryCAT, is similar to Snappy Fingers and works with same source data. The difference lies in that Query Cat specialises in health issues and medical conditions.
Visual Search Engines:
Eye Plorer ( β June 2009 ), this returns facts ( source Wikipedia ), not web pages.
N Explore, three different ways of viewing search results.
Search Me, presents pictures of web pages that answer your search.
Ujiko, somewhat similar to "Eye Plorer".
View Zi [ Meta ], seemingly countless ways to view your search results.
Advice on How to Submit your Website:
When you decide to use the search engine's free listing submission, print-out the submission form first. Then you go back to your "cabin" and study the form carefully. Take your time and fill out your print-out form first. Then you go back on the Net and fill in the actual on-line submission form. Usually you cannot later change the data you have submitted.
Before you submit your entry, check your website isn't already in that search engine databank. There are two ways you can do it:
• A. You type in 2 - 3 keywords from your main page and search. If your webpage doesn't come up, it could still be there but with a very low ranking. Alternate "B" is more reliable.
• B. You type in the URL of your main page and search (= www.example.com/xxx.html). Do not use your index page URL. Only when your page doesn't come up in this search, then you should go ahead and submit.
Some Symbols Used in searching patterns:
* Indicates search engine that accepts free listings, look for "add URL", "add link", or "submit" page.
"en" Indicates English language version of a regional search engine.
"xx" Other languages as indicated (i.e.: "es" = Spanish).
"β" Final testing version.
<-- Indicates data comes from a different source.
"Meta" is a search engine that collects data from other search engines.

Google Self Modification Techniques
There are some methods that can be utilised to override the automatic redirection, bypass Google localized search and access the standard version of Google Web Search:
1.If you usually browse in English then, at the bottom right hand side of your Google Homepage, click on “Go to Google.com”. This will take you to the English version of the standard Google Homepage.
2.If you prefer, you can type “google.com/ncr” ("ncr" = No Country Redirection) in the address bar of your browser. When you use this option the Google cookie will override your current preference and save this new preference. It effectively switches off the Google geotargeting. The next time you access google.com you will not be redirected to your local version.
3.Google Advanced Search (Google Advanced Search in English - http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en) by clicking on “Date, usage rights, numeric range, and more “ and then choosing the country from the drop-down list accessed from the down-arrow next to “Region” - choose “any region” or perhaps “United States”. You can change the language here also.
4.You can obtain Google Web Search results from an alternative location by adding or changing the “gl” parameter of the URL, for example http://google.com/search?q=google&gl=us or http://google.com/search?q=google&gl=uk
5.You can access GoogleTheGlobe and click on the US flag (or a limited set of other Google County Web Search options.
6.If you use the Firefox browser you can upload the Mozilla Google Global extension (the URL for the download page is at the.bottom of this article).

10 htaccess Hacks Every SEO Should Know
by ssrivastav on 25 June 2010
There’s a lot that you can do with an htaccess file, and of course, things can get pretty advanced in a hurry. Here, we’re going to keep things pretty simple. These are the 10 basic htaccess hacks that every webmaster should know.
1. Force Caching with htaccess
Use: The following htaccess code won’t help the initial pageload, but it will significantly help subsequent pageloads by sending 304 status when requested elements haven’t been modified.
FileETag MTime Size
ExpiresActive on
ExpiresDefault “access plus x seconds”
I generally set the cache for one day (86400 seconds). You can also set different expirations for each file type by breaking each file type up into separate ExpiresByType lines such as:
ExpiresByType image/gif “access plus x seconds”
ExpiresByType text/css “access plus x seconds”
Simple!
2. Set a Custom 404 Page with htaccess
Use: I think this one is self explantatory. Just change ‘/notfound.html’ to match the path to your custom 404 page.
ErrorDocument 404 /notfound.html
3. Implement a 301 Redirect with htaccess
Use: If you have permanently changed the URL structure on your site (via either optimization change or CMS migration), you will want to implement 301 redirects from the old URL to the new URL.
The syntax for a basic 301 redirect is:
Redirect 301 relative/path/to/oldurl/ http://www.domain.com/newurl/
Explanation:
The first URL should be a relative path to the old URL and the second one should be an absolute path to the new URL.
4. Only allow specific IP addresses in certain directories
This is especially useful for admin directories. I generally set my home IP and work IP as the only allowable IPs who can even attempt a login. Unlike other .htaccess hacks, this one doesn’t work from the root folder. You will need to create a new .htaccess file, put the following code in it, and upload it to your admin directory.
AuthUserFile /dev/null
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName “Example Access Control”
AuthType Basic
order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from xx.xx.xx.xx
To allow a second IP, just add another ‘allow from’ line.
5. Prevent Image Hot Linking with htaccess
Removed. Here is a MUCH better way to go about this thanks to Maurizio Petrone
6. Enable gzip with htaccess
Gzip is a means of compressing the files on your server so they will load faster. To enable gzip, just
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml application/xml application/xhtml+xml text/javascript text/css application/x-javascript
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4 gzip-only-text/html
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4.0[678] no-gzip
BrowserMatch bMSIE !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html
7. Remove ‘category’ from a URL with htaccess
Many content management sytems use the ‘category’ URL segment. For instance:
http://makeitrank.com/category/category-name
Well, that’s fine, and it’s necessary to make the CMS work the way it’s supposed to, but it doesn’t need to be visible to do its job. Just drop the following code into your htaccess file to get rid of it.
RewriteRule ^category/(.+)$ http://www.yourdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]
8. Define any page as the home page with htaccess
You can set any page as the homepage by adding the following to the htaccess file in your root directory.
DirectoryIndex myfile
9. Disable Directory Browsing
You want to keep people out of any directories that might reveal security weaknesses — for instance, plugin directories.
You can block vistors from browsing the directories by adding the following line to the htaccess file in the directory you’d like to block:
Options All -Indexes
10. Protect your htaccess file
Lastly, you want to protect your htaccess file. Hopefully your host has protected it for you, but you can’t be too safe with these things. The following hack will prevent anybody from accessing your htaccess:
order allow,deny
deny from all
Are there any useful htaccess hacks I’ve left out? Let me know!

How To Optimize Images To Increase Rankings
How To Optimize Images To Increase Rankings - A Short List
Now, here is a list of things to keep in mind when optimizing for images.
1. Give an appropriate filename for images on your website. If the image is a picture of a green frog. Then name it something like green_frog.gif.
2. If possible, the title of the page should match the keyword. This strengthens the effect of an image to a search engine, and further reinforces what your page is about.
3. Make sure you image is not blocked by a referrer link, JavaScript, or similar. There can be many reasons to use a referring link, but if there is none then do not block the source of an image.
4. Use standard path, instead of JavaScript.
5. Use an appropriate ALT attribute with the keyword in the img tag.
6. Use an appropriate TITLE attribute with the img tag.
7. Text NEAR the image should be appropriate. Text near an image also can tell a search engine more about the images it's indexing. Keep this in mind when writing content or ad copy around your images.
8. Use spaces, hyphens, or underscores in naming your images. This separates keywords, thus making them easier to identify.
9. Where the ALT or TITLE attribute is located in the img tag does not matter. An attribute is an attribute and where is located makes no difference to a screen reader or a search engine.
10. Keep keywords and relevant comments in the ALT and TITLE tags to a minimum. You don't want to get penalized by a search engine for spamming with too many keywords crammed into a tag. Plus doing so will not do much for your either. Use only what it takes to identify the image.
11. Search for your images in Google or AllTheWeb. Do a search with Google's Image search to see if you can locate your images in the search results. The particulars of ranking images are more controllable than websites, so the results should allow you to see changes more clearly.
12. The Red Button - If you do not want your images present in the search engines for what ever reason, then the magic red button to turn them off is using your robots.txt correctly. Put a disallow line to block your /images/ directory from all user-agents or select search engine robots. Likewise, if you are blocking your /images/ directory and can't seem to find you images in Google then may you should remove the disallow line. For more information about robots.txt please visit here: http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/robots.html
Adding simple alt and title tags to an img tag may not seem to be too important. But it can be go a long way if it's the little extra push you need to rank better in the search engines.

Ads Placement position to make a high earning
Google recognizes this and they publish a "heat map" of how much revenue ads placed in certain portions of the page can bring you. Experimenting is often the best way you can find, what suits the sub conscious mind of your audience.
This "heat map" illustrates the ideal placing on a sample page layout. The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance). All other things being equal, ads located above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold. Ads placed near rich content and navigational aids usually do well because users are focused on those areas of a page.
While this heat map is useful as a positioning guideline, we strongly recommend putting your users first when deciding on ad location. Think about their behavior on different pages, and what will be most useful and visible to them. You'll find that the most optimal ad position isn't always what you expect on certain pages.
Also, placing ads to the left side of your page seems to work better almost all the time. Of course, this is logical because text is generally written from left to right (unless you come from certain countries where it's the other way around).
People will finish a sentence and return their eyes to the left position, which means they have a higher chance of spotting your ads.

How to make a Flash site rank well in Search engines?
A few tips for using flash (if you must use it):
* Create descriptive useful page titles and meta descriptions.
* Embed the flash into HTML pages and use regular text links on the page if possible.
* If it does not screw up the design too bad add HTML text to the page.
* Create textual representations of what is in the flash using noembed tags.
* Instead of including everything in one flash file it may make sense to break the content into different flash files so you can create different HTML pages around the different ideas contained in it.
* Macromedia has a search engine SDK, although I think most sites are still best off using texual representations of the flash files on the HTML content of pages
* Mike Knott also recommended this JavaScript plugin for flash detection. It is XHTML compliant, and, so long as you use it properly, it is better than the Noembed tag.

How do I delete my website from the Google index ?
There are instructions on one of the Google pages.
If you want to delete your entry from Google's index AND take the site down, then you need to remove the content (so it returns 404 errors) and then choose Google's remove from index option (you specify your now-defunct URL). I guess you have to remove your content first so as to prevent malicious index-removals.
If you want your site to remain present for those-in-the-know, but just not indexed in search engines, then use the robots.txt file as other posters suggested. Google offers info on the format of robots.txt - tis very straightforward.

What are the various directories for different search engines?
How to Get Listed In Google
There are three ways to list your site with Google, but I will warn you that using any one of these 3 methods no longer guarantees your site will be listed.
Google is getting more and more selective about who gets in, and the first step is ensuring that your site is full of useful, unique content.
After that, work on getting quality, relevant sites to link back to you. These days those two steps are the best ways to find your site in the almighty Google.
Having said that, here are some methods that may also get you in...
1) Get your site listed in The Open Directory - www.dmoz.org.
This is a directory that is managed by volunteers that act as "category editors." To list your site, simply go to the most appropriate category for your web site, then drill down to the relevant subcategory and select the "Add URL" link at the top of that category's page.
Wait about a month to see if your site appears. If it does not, I recommend emailing one of the category editors and asking for advice on how to get your site listed. If you're lucky, you'll receive a helpful response, but most of the category managers do not answer emails.
Sometimes it may take up to one year for an editor to review and list your site and other times it may only take a couple of weeks. Be patient and please don't keep submitting!
Unfortunately since DMOZ is run by volunteers, the time it takes to get your site reviewed really depends on the availability of the volunteers. Sometimes they may not check the submissions for weeks, which can be quite frustrating for people trying to get listed.
Lately, it seems to be more and more difficult to get in, but the good news is this is not the only way to get into Google. Years ago this was one of the fastest ways to get listed and ranked. Fortunately there are other options that are just as effective, and I'll discuss those below.
Warning: Don't try to submit to The Open Directory unless you have enough useful information on your site. If your site is only one or two pages long, then you won't likely get listed. They want medium to large sized web sites with useful and unique content. Strive for at least 15 pages.
If you need more content, articlecity.com has some free articles you can post on your site. Simply find the category that closely matches your theme and add them. Be careful though, don't use too many articles because the engines may penalize your site if you have too much duplicate content.
2) The second way to get listed in Google is to use their own Add URL form located here http://www.google.com/addurl.html. This method is not as dependable as listing with The Open Directory, but it can get you in. Google admits that they may not add every site, so don't be surprised if this does not work for you.
3) The third way to get listed is to be linked from another web site that is already in Google. That way, when Google's spider goes to visit that site for updates, it will pick up the link to your site and add it. This method does not always work, but many sites do get in this way.
Getting into Yahoo and Live (Formerly MSN)
Most websites get into Yahoo and Live by getting spidered from other sites. Meaning if you're already linked from another site or web directory, Live and Yahoo's robots will eventually find you when they update their search index.
If you don't want to wait to get spidered, you can submit directly to Live by going here http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx.
Do not keep re-submitting your site. It will not speed up the process of getting listed and may even get you banned.
Yahoo's direct submission site is https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit.
The Yahoo Directory
Not to be confused with the regular Yahoo search function, the Yahoo directory is also a place you can add your site.
When you go to Yahoo.com and enter a search into the box, you are using their regular search engine, not the directory. So it is possible to be included in Yahoo's regular search index and not be included in their directory.
The Yahoo directory is actually a categorical listing of sites located here http://dir.yahoo.com and it's not used very much by web surfers.
The real benefit to being listed here is to have a high quality link pointing to your site. Many search engines look at who is linking to you and if you have a link from the Yahoo directory, it may give you some "credibility" points.
Some believe that having a listing in the directory will help boost your rank in Google and other engines. There is no solid proof of this, however. Yahoo also states that if you are listed in their directory, it does not have any affect on your position in their regular search results.
If your site is commercial it will cost you $299 per year to be included in Yahoo's directory. So if you can justify/afford the cost, I would still recommend getting into Yahoo just to have the high-quality link pointing to your site - but don't expect a lot of traffic from the actual page you'll be listed on.
It's up to you to decide if it's worth it or not. Many webmasters do quite well in the "Big 3" search engines without a listing in the Yahoo directory.

Formatting for forum signature for best exposure
How do you ensure that your forum signature is read and not ignored like the tens of forum signatures of the other members who have posted in the same discussion? How do you use your forum signature for maximum benefit?
Here are some tips for optimizing forum sigatures :
1. Do not post more than 3 links. Anything more than that is certaintly viewed as spam and most people will ignore your forum signature.
2. Do not post something like: " http://feeds.feedburner.com/ssrivastav- Webmaster community ". Instead, if possible, post your link with "anchor text". The word "webmaster community" should be the link enclosed by the < a href > tags. This would benefit your link in SEO.
3. Include more than just a link. Be more descriptive around your forum signature and links. For example, use something like "Over 10,000 members in the best webmaster community" (with link from the keyword 'webmaster community'). Or something to entice the viewer to click through to your website, eg. "Submit articles to our article library and stand to win $100".
4. Use at most 3 colors in your forum signature. It is a good idea to highlight the keyword/link with color such as blue or red. Leave the rest of the text in black.
It takes some experimenting to find the best forum signature format for each forum. With these 4 tips in mind, your chances of improving click-through rates from your forum signature will increase tremendously.

How much keywords should be on a Webpage?
In addition to this, when you try to include too many keywords on a single web page you will end up looking like spam to both visitors and the search engines themselves. Therefore, with SEO and the usage of keywords, a simpler, more laid back approach is necessary. You want to target fewer keywords per page as opposed to all of them or almost all of them.
So what’s the solution for how many keywords to include? There is no exact number, but a good start is to target 2 to 3 keywords per page with your SEO strategies. Then, if you have a dozen pages on your website and that list of 25 keywords, you can make each page go after about 2, and you’ll be targeting every one of your keywords. You’ll be reducing the overload and making your site much more specific and targeted. Your SEO results will quickly improve and your rankings will soar.
Of course, this number is just a basic guideline. For pages with lots of content, you can include more than 2 different keywords as a prime focus. However, for a page with just one hundred words, targeting 2 to 3 different key phrases would be excessive.
Length of longest keyword in list, should be 100 chars or less. Keep your keywords meta-tag length between 200 and 500 characters.
